The Position

The African Canadian Resource Network (ACRN) is pleased to advertise for the position of Acting Executive Director, for a 2 month term (November and December 2017).

 Applicants are asked to consider the following:

  • The position being advertised is part-time (approx. 80 hours per month).
  • The position is a short-term role to cover a leave-of-absence. The focus will be on continuity, carrying out the plans already made, and advising when there is a need to adjust those plans. 
  • In the following job description, the expectations will focus on sections 1 (“Serve as primary staff”), 2 (“Serve as primary contact”), and other duties as assigned, primarily by the Board Chairperson.

Duties of Acting Executive Director

The Acting Executive Director shall serve as the acting chief executive officer of ACRN working in collaboration with the Chair and the Board of ACRN.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Acting Executive Director will manage the day- to-day operations of the ACRN. It is essential that the Acting Executive Director understands, subscribes to and upholds the values of the corporation at all times, and show strong leadership toward achieving the vision, mission, goals and targets set by the Membership and Board. During the period, the Acting Executive Director working with the Board will be responsible for working towards being accountable for all of ACRN’s operating affairs and will make timely progress reports to the Board of Directors.


Job Description

The Acting Executive Director will be responsible for the following tasks or duties:

  1. Serve as primary staff for the Board of Directors:
  1. Coordinate and manage all ongoing ACRN projects.
  2. Coordinate ACRN Board Meetings, Committee Meetings and Retreats.
  3. Attend regular and special meetings of the ACRN Board of Directors, as required.
  4. Keep Board Directors informed in a timely manner about key issues that impact or may impact the organization.
  5. Identify and research strategic opportunities for ACRN and keep the board informed of such opportunities.
  6. Plan and execute the operations of ACRN in accordance with the by-laws and policies of the organization.
  1. Serve as primary contact for information and communications:
  1. Handle ACRN’s public relations.
  2. Serve as community liaison for the organization.
  3. Serve as first point of contact.
  4. Be an information repository for the organization and ensure that organizational knowledge gained is well documented for future use.
  5. Maintain a personal understanding of local, provincial and federal laws and regulations as they apply to the mission and operations of the organization.
  1. Serve as the principal fundraiser of the organization
  1. Build short and long-term financial sustainability for the organization.
  2. Research and pursue grant opportunities.
  3. Engage corporate partners for current projects.
  4. Develop fund raising vehicles for the organization.
  1. Recruit and Manage Office Staff
  1. Develop office staff position descriptions and make hiring and termination decisions in collaboration with the Board of Directors.
  2. Recruit and screen candidates for office staff positions.
  3. Supervise office staff and conduct periodic staff evaluations.
  4. Provide mentorship and support to office staff, as needed.
  5. Oversee organizational finances and budget
  1. Other duties as assigned by the Board, in alignment with ACRN’s values and goals.


  • Minimum of an undergraduate degree in an applicable field (e.g. business administration, social sciences, communications, management).
  • 2+ years of leadership/management experience in the not-for-profit sector, or a related field.
  • Project management experience.
  • Proven proficiency in preparing and managing budgets and accurately accounting for and reporting financial information.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong interpersonal skills that facilitate relationship building among various ACRN stakeholders.
  • Effective decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, and ability to learn and operate stakeholder database programs.
  • Previous experience working in the non-profit sector is considered an asset.
